Worship Committee Report by Jean Bakken
Committee Members:
Chairperson & Council Rep.: Jean Bakken
Altar Guild: Sylvia Holthusen
Music Coordinator: Liz Schuur
Acolyte Coordinator : Ann Olson
Usher/Lector Coordinator: Needed
The objective of the Worship & Music Committee is to coordinate and facilitate the various facets of our worship service. Their efforts help the Pastor conduct meaningful Sunday and special occasion services.
Music is an important part of our services, and Liz Schuur does a wonderful job of selecting and playing music appropriate to the occasion. She also spends a lot of time facilitating Choir and special occasion music. Let's also give a hearty thanks to our Choir members for their uplifting contribution to our services.
The Altar Guild, under the leadership of Sylvia Holthusen, is responsible for cleaning the altar area each week, setting up and serving Communion twice per month, and changing the Paraments on the altar for the various seasons of the church year. Special thanks to Kathy Derner, Doris and Jill Peterson, and helpers for the very nice banners and decorations that have spruced up our Sanctuary during the year.
We have a very nice flower chart on the bulletin board, so please sign up to provide flowers for services or special occasions. Flowers "in memory of" or "in honor of" are a wonderful way to remember special occasions such as Anniversaries or Birthdays (and they can be taken home after the services).
Children, third grade and younger, have the opportunity to take part in the children's message, then enjoy an activity bag with a treat during the regular message. We need a volunteer to prepare the children's bags.
The use of four offering plates has helped to speed up that portion of our service. Thank to Terry and Carol Love, Mike and Doris Petersen, and Terry and Glenda Lind for the brass offering plates. Thanks to Kathy Derner and her Dad for the very nice Christmas tree, to Doris Peterson for tree decorations, to Terry and Carol Love for the Advent candles, to Glenda Lind, Jeanie Bergquist, Karen Weiman, and Lori Hall for the candle followers, and to Gary and Margaret Porter for the individual candle cups. All of these donations and other unmentioned ones helped make our Advent and Christmas services better.
Our Worship Committee has several opportunities to serve. Please consider one or more of these areas:
* Usher Coordinator
* Lector Coordinator
* Children's Activity Bag Preparer
* Prepare Altar for Communion, Pour Wine (Altar Guild)
* Banner and Decorations Committee (Altar Guild)
* Future Nursery Coordinator
Thanks to all who have volunteered. You make our Worship services more personal and more meaningful.
Outreach Committee Report
The Outreach Committee, Holly and Rob Mittelstaedt, Julie Berg and Robin Brown, who recently joined our team in the later part of 1998, has had an exciting year welcoming 21 new families into our family.
We've participated in serving and preparing a Soup Supper during Lent, "Bring a Friend" Brunch last spring, a terrific "New Member Picnic" last summer and the "Summer Celebration" including a concert, ice cream social, and outdoor games. We are planning a Friendship Dinner on February 12, 1999.
Thank you to our friends at Family of Christ for helping us welcome many families this past year. God Bless You!

The Youth Committee has made some changes and additions to the youth program over the last year. We worked on some of these ideas and changes at a retreat that was held at St. Olaf College in Northfield. We met with Bill Helber, youth director at Grace Lutheran in Apple Valley. Bill shared experiences that he has had working with youth and ideas that might help us improve our youth program-with the focus on peer ministry and getting youth more involved and helping with the youth program. We also met with Pastor Lon for his guidance and thoughts on the youth program. He also shared his experiences.
One of the goals for the 1998 youth program was to have more devotional time at youth events. One of the programs started this year, Cross Walk, held Sunday evenings and lead by Sherry Goodman, has been very good and meaningful devotion time with 7th-12th grade youth. Sherry has done very well with Cross Walk and sharing God's word with our youth and having some fun too.
